The Blacksburg High School class of 1958 celebrated its 60th reunion with two evenings (June 8 and 9) of fun-filled activities.
Friday night, classmates gathered at the Farmhouse Restaurant Patio in Christiansburg for an evening of sharing drinks and memories as classmates at BHS.
On Saturday evening, the group met again at the Farmhouse for food and fun.
The social hour was a time for catching up with fifty-four classmates and guests.
After a delicious buffet, classmate Rev. Jimmie Price led the group in a moment of silence in remembrance of the forty-seven deceased classmates and Mr. R.T. Hale, who was BHS principal during the five years of the Class of ’58. He had attended all ten previous class reunions.
The Class of ’58 attended the old BHS in downtown Blacksburg from Sept. 1953 until Jan 2. 1957 when the new BHS on South Main Street opened. The school was later became the Blacksburg Middle School. The Blacksburg Middle School sat vacant for ten years and was later demolished and recently sold.
The nineteen veterans attending our reunion were recognized, thanked for their service and presented an American flag.
There was a table that held many items that brought back memories of the class of 1958. Among them especially, was the large print by Leslie Gregg, portraying our cherished mascot, the Indian, five yearbooks (1954-1958), picture albums of past reunions, a pair of black-and-white saddle oxfords and a BHS band jacket.
Suzanne Price Jones reported that there have been twelve BHS seniors who have been awarded the Class of 1958 Scholarship since its inception in 2008. To help the class members remember to contribute to the scholarship, the reunion committee suggested each class member, on their birthday, each year, contribute to this scholarship fund so that the legacy will live on.
Members and spouses of the Bhs Class of 1958 are invited to meet at 11:30 on the first Monday of each moth at the Golden Corral (New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg) for fellowship.
