In the sure and certain hope of the resurrection, Jeffrey Joseph Shumate, 58, of Wytheville, Virginia entered the Church Triumphant on Aug. 24, 2018. Jeff was born on July 11, 1960 in Roanoke, Virginia and was the son of Thomas Joseph Shumate and the late Frances P. Burford.
He is survived by his loving family, Thomas Joseph Shumate, Elizabeth J. Shumate, Toni Walther (Ron) of Mechanicsville Va., Al Shumate of Elk, Calif., Bob Haslett (Martha) of North Potomac, Md., and Beth Strickland (Randy) of Rockledge, Fla.
Jeff was adored by nieces and nephews Jen, Dan, Billy, Cliff, Rachel and Robby, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was blessed with many special friends.
Those who knew Jeff will remember him as witty, intelligent and a gentle soul. He loved sports especially golf and tennis.
Jeff is finally at rest and pain free. He suffered valiantly from the ravages of debilitating arthritis, depression, addiction, and eventual incurable liver cirrhosis. He chose to end his life.
Jeff graduated from George Wythe High School in 1978 and attended VA Tech. He was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville where a celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday Sept. 1, conducted by Pastor Colleen Montgomery. The family will be greeted by friends prior to this celebration from noon until 2 pm.
