Blacksburg High School is a repeat performer after winning the Class 4 West regional golf title for the second year in a row.
The team also won the state championship last season and will be given a chance to defend the title next week.
On Monday, the Bruins shot a 2-over-par 286 to win the event at the Winton Country Club in Amherst.
Coach Rick Mattox said despite not getting a practice round in due to all the bad weather, the team played well on a course they’d never seen before.
Soren Winistorfer recorded a 3-under-68 to take individual honors. Mattox thought his young golfer played well.
“He came to hole 9 with three bogeys and three birdies on the front nine, but really got his game going with a great chip in for birdie on nine and then another birdie at 14 and 18 to finish 3 under par”
Melissa Meng shot a 71 with Jake Duncan at 73 and Ben Carroll a 74. Team wise, Jefferson Forest finished second, also advancing to states.
Blacksburg will now go for another state championship Tuesday at the Williamsburg National Golf Course.
Mattox expects the tourney to be a tough time, because they will be playing Jamestown on their home course, Williamsburg National, which is Bermuda grass.
“We don’t play on Bermuda, so we’re going to be at a disadvantage. Hopefully, the team will play well enough to bring home another title,” he said.
