Art Exhibit: Debby Freed with DSF Ceramics
All Month of October, at the Blacksburg Library
Based in Montgomery County, Artist Debby Freed works from her home. Her pieces are hand built, using slab, pinch pot, coil, and other hand building techniques. A member of Round the Mountain and the Blue Ridge Potters Guild, Freed takes part in the annual Potters Guild shows.
Art Exhibit: Kathy Elich
All Month of October, at the Blacksburg Library
Kathy Elich is a printmaker, potter and painter living and working in the Appalachian Mountains just outside of Blacksburg, Virginia. In the work exhibited here, Kathy utilizes multiple primitive printmaking techniques: serigraphy, linoleum/wood block, letterpress and calligraphy. A serigraph is a fine art, limited edition print created using screen printing techniques. Most of the pieces depict people, animals or places that are important to the artist. Her work in all mediums is often on display and available for purchase at Mill Mountain Coffee & Tea of Blacksburg, which is owned and managed by Kathy’s husband, Scott.

Learn about the exciting world of insects and their arthropod friends from VT graduate student mentors and staff. Meet and hold some of the V.I.B.’s (Very Important Bugs) from Virginia Tech’s Bug Zoo. Get creative with a bug-inspired craft that will jump-start your costume for the Hokie BugFest parade. You will even see where a passion for insects can lead as author/illustrator Kellie Worrell and 13-year-old Junior Entomologist Michael Worrell share their stories. Kellie will bring her children’s book “The Collectors” that chronicles Michael’s adventures into the world of entomology. And Michael will show off his award-winning insect collection and describe how other kids can start their own collections!

This meeting will include instruction as well as practice time. All are welcome. Cindy Cowden has been practicing mindfulness meditation, or insight meditation, since 1990. She has taught the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Program and the Insight Meditation course. She enjoys sharing this practice with people who are curious about how mindfulness might support their lives.
