Auburn High School fell just short of back-to-back state Class 1 golf titles on Monday, 17 strokes behind first-place George Wythe. Auburn’s Carter Vance and Jentzen Gore, both finished with a 75 for second place individually.
George Wythe tallied a team total of 310 as Channing Blevins took medalist honors with a 73. Central Luxenburg finished third and Essex fourth.
Meanwhile in the Class 4 ranks, Blacksburg was unable to pull off a three-peat. The Bruins finished second to Jamestown Tuesday.
Blacksburg finished with a blistering 299, but it wasn’t good enough as Jamestown (291) took advantage of playing on their home course at the Williamsburg National Golf Club. Riverside was third at 305 and Heritage-Leesburg with a 308.
Ben Carroll sthot a 72 to lead Blacksburg, while regional champion and defending state medalist Soren Winistorfer was back in the pack with a 77. Melissa Meng shot a 75 and Jake Duncan a 77.
In Class 2, Union took the team title with the west regional champ, Radford, in sixth. Union had a 303 and Wilson Memorial second with 326 and Poquoson a 327. Radford totaled a 336.
Individually, B Davis led the Bobcats with a 80 followed by Trevor Price at 81. Gracie Blacksburg had an 87.
