Bridgewater downs E&H
The Bridgewater College Football Team (4-4, 3-3 ODAC) picked up a 53-13 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (3-5, 2-4 ODAC) Saturday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. It was the second-straight win for the Eagles in the series following three-straight victories for the Wasps from 2014-16.
Emory & Henry will return home for its final ODAC game of the year next Saturday against Guilford College. The contest, which will also serve as Senior Day for the Wasps, will kick off at 1 p.m.
Hokies down Liberty in exhibition
The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team defeated Liberty, 86-70, in exhibition action Sunday afternoon. The game, to benefit hurricane relief efforts, was played at the Vines Center on the Liberty campus.
The Flames took a 37-36 lead into the intermission, but Tech opened the second half strong and outscored Liberty, 50-33, in the second half.
Five Hokies finished the game in double figures, led by senior point guard Justin Robinson, with 20 points and nine assists in just under 28 minutes of action. Freshman Isaiah Wilkins scored 16 points and senior Ahmed Hill scored 15 points. Redshirt junior Kerry Blackshear Jr., and sophomore Nickeil Alexander-Walker added 10 points each.
Blackshear and senior Ty Outlaw led the Hokies with seven rebounds each, as Tech outrebounded the Flames, 39-18. Tech shot 57.1 percent from the field for the game, including 63 percent in the second half. Tech made 10-of-19 from behind the 3-point arc, for 52.6 percent.
Lewis, Moore win the Hokie Open
Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Mekhi Lewis and freshman Mitch Moore won titles at their respective weight classes at the Hokie Open on Sunday held at the Berglund Center in Roanoke.
Overall, 15 Hokies placed and eight reached the finals at the that tournament officially opened the 2018-19 season for Tech.
Lewis, the 2018 Junior World champion at 74 kg, went 4-0, headlined by an 8-6 decision over No. 18 Bryce Martin of Indiana in the finals.
Moore defeated two opponents from NC State and pinned Virginia’s Gray Hart at 1:19 in the semifinals en route to winning the title in his first collegiate action.
Carilion Clinic scholarship winner
Emily Mahar led the Virginia Tech women’s golf team in scoring during its recently concluded fall season. Saturday afternoon, she scored big off the course as well.
Mahar, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, received the 2018 Carilion Clinic Scholarship for Virginia Tech Athletics and was recognized during an on-field presentation midway through the Virginia Tech-Boston College football game at Lane Stadium. Mahar is pursuing a degree in human development and plans to seek a career in physical therapy.
Mahar played well on the course this fall, recording three top-20 finishes in five events, including a top-five and a top-10 finish.
The 19-year-old played her high school golf at Xavier College Prep in Phoenix before enrolling at Tech, and she hopes to play professional golf before embarking on a career as a physical therapist. Her goal is to open her own physical therapy clinic for up-and-coming athletes.
Robinson on Naismith List
Virginia Tech point guard Justin Robinson has been named to the watch list for the 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy Men’s Player of the Year. The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced the list on Monday.
Robinson, a senior from Manassas, Virginia, led the Hokies in scoring and assists last season. A 2018 All-ACC second team selection, Robinson enters his senior season fifth on the all-time Virginia Tech assists list, with 435 and 45th on the school’s career scoring list, with 1,041 career points. .
A list of the midseason 30 team will be released on Feb. 13, 2019, followed by the 10 national semifinalists and four finalists on March 4, 2019 and March 19, 2019 respectively. The 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy will be awarded on at the Naismith Awards Brunch on April 7, 2019, during the Final Four in Minneapolis.
