The Town of Christiansburg on Thursday, Nov. 15, will unveil its first-ever Town-sponsored mural on the front of the Christiansburg Police Department building.
The public is invited to attend the unveiling at noon to hear the story behind the mural and meet artist Dave Mann.
Sherwin-Williams donated all necessary painting supplies to Mann, who painted the mural on an aluminum-metal sheet that will be attached to the police department’s building.
The Montgomery County Christmas Store allowed Mann to paint the mural in their warehouse space.
The Town of Christiansburg is paying Mann a $1,000 stipend for his work, and Mann has chosen to donate that money to New River Stage and Christiansburg Institute.
The mural is the latest in a roll-out of street art projects sponsored by the Town.
In October, a water meter manhole cover on the sidewalk of West Main Street in downtown Christiansburg was transformed into a horse and wagon by artist Nikki Pynn.
The Town of Christiansburg paid Pynn a $100 stipend and purchased needed art supplies.
Two storm drains in Cambria were painted by Katy Shepard – one as a flower with bees and another as a frog with lilies. An anonymous donor from the community paid for Shepard’s painting supplies and a stipend for her work.
An Appalachian Electric Power (AEP) power box on Hickok Street in downtown is being painted by the Tuxedo Pandas, a program of the New River Robotics Association, which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization chartered to promote STEM with area middle and high schoolers.
The Tuxedo Pandas plan to transform the power box into a robotic panda. The Town has provided needed art supplies for the project.
The Town also planned to have Christiansburg High School students paint the road in the permanently closed portion of Hickok Street, but that project was delayed due to weather and has not yet been rescheduled.
Thursday’s mural unveiling will take place at noon outside of the Christiansburg Police Department, 10 E. Main Street.
