Concord men ranked
The Concord University men’s basketball team is slotted 10th in this week’s D2SIDA Atlantic Regional Poll. Indiana (Pa.) picked up four first-place votes and 57 points to edge out West Liberty (55 points and two first-place votes) for first. Fairmont State (49 points) was pegged third. Shippensburg (41) and Virginia State (35) completed the top five.
East Stroudsburg (22), Slippery Rock (21), Notre Dame (17), West Chester (15) and Concord (10) occupied spots six through 10.
Nunley second POW honor
Radford University Radford redshirt junior Sydney Nunley was named the Big South Conference’s top player for the second straight week on Monday afternoon.
Nunley earned the Player of the Week after recording three double-doubles, and averaged 19.3 points with 14.3 rebounds as Radford finished 2-1. The center tallied 22 points and 20 rebounds in an 80-58 victory over High Point on Tuesday. She followed with another 20-point effort with 22 points plus 12 boards in a setback at Hampton on Thursday. Nunley rounded out the span with 14 points and 11 caroms in the victory over Winthrop on Sunday.
The Lewisburg, West Virginia native has enjoyed a spectacular six-game stretch for the Highlanders in the pivot. The Greenbrier East product is averaging 18.2 points, 13.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks during the stretch.
Allegretta state sportscaster of year
Mike “Doc” Emrick, Bob Ley, Peter King, and Tony Kornheiser have been voted into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame and will be inducted this June, NSMA executive director Dave Goren announced. Goren also said that NSMA members voted Doris Burke as the 2018 National Sportscaster of the Year, Adrian Wojnarowski as the 2018 National Sportswriter of the Year; and members in each state elected 109 state Sportscasters and Sportswriters of the Year from 49 states, plus the District of Columbia. They will be honored during the 60th annual NSMA Awards Weekend, June 22-24, 2019 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Andrew Allegretta, radio play-by-play announcer for women’s basketball and baseball on the Virginia Tech IMG Sports Network, was voted the 2018 Virginia Sportscaster of the Year. It’s his first win. David Teel of the Newport News Daily Press, was voted the Virginia Sportswriter of the Year for a record 12th time. Allegretta has served as the Assistant Director of Broadcasting with the Hokies for the past six seasons.
Concord women also ranked
After receiving votes in the D2SIDA Atlantic Regional Poll four different times this season, the Concord University women’s basketball team has been ranked ninth by the organization in this week’s rankings.
The Mountain Lions are coming off a 2-0 week that saw them extend their winning streak to five games.
Indiana (Pa.) was a unanimous choice atop the poll, garnering all six first-place votes and 60 points. California (Pa.) picked up 52 points as it was slotted second. Virginia Union (50 points), Bowie State (40) and Charleston (37) rounded out the top five.
ACC honors Patterson
Freshman Jacory Patterson has been named Co-ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
This marks the first time that Patterson has earned a weekly award from the conference.
Patterson, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, broke the school record and the U20 World Junior indoor record in the 300 at the Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend, finishing the race in a time of 32.49 seconds to place first. His mark was also the second fastest NCAA indoor time ever in the event and the ninth fastest ever by an American.
