Free admission for federal employees
The Virginia Tech Athletics Department will offer all federal employees two free tickets at a home women’s basketball games against Sunday, Jan. 27 against Florida State the ticket office announced Wednesday morning.
All federal government employees must show their proper I.D. at the promotions entrance, which can be found at door 8 in the Cassell Coliseum lobby. Each employee will receive two complimentary tickets.
Tip is set for 2 p.m. against the Seminoles on Sunday. The doors to Cassell Coliseum open 90 minutes prior to tipoff.
ACC network schedule
Virginia Tech Athletics is pleased to announce its spring live event/broadcast matrix on Wednesday, which includes a combined 57 games at Beamer-Lawson Indoor Practice Facility, English Field at Union Park, Tech Softball Park and Thompson Field.
Tech’s baseball game against Boston College on Monday, May 5 will be on ESPNU, the lone linear broadcast.
Jon Laaser and former pitcher for the Hokies Andrew Wells will be the primary talent for baseball’s broadcast. Both return to the booth after calling games the previous seasons.
Laaser has plenty of baseball experience, working for the Richmond Flying Squirrels, a Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, a Class A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves at the time. Wells, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, played for the Hokies from 2003-08 and racked up 133 strikeouts in 247.2 innings pitched.
Evan Hughes will be the main broadcaster for Tech’s nationally-ranked lacrosse team, returning after calling two games last season. Hughes, a sophomore in the multimedia journalism program at Tech, is well-rounded from covering baseball this past summer with the St. Cloud Rox Baseball Club (Minn.) to wrestling, men’s and women’s basketball games at Tech this winter.
Bailey Angle and Hughes will have the main duties for softball commentary. Angle, who has been doing games for Tech softball since 2015, has also called games for the Erie SeaWolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, as well as Bluefield College and Tech volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball.
ACC honors Hokie
Sophomore Rachel Baxter of Virginia Tech’s track and field team has been named ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
The Orange, California native posted the fourth-best mark in school history at the Hokie Invitational last weekend, clearing a height of 4.34 meters (14 feet, 2.75 inches) in the pole vault to place first. This marks the second time in her career that she has earned a weekly honor from the office. She joins Jacory Patterson as the only other Hokie selected for the weekly award this indoor season.
Baxter’s mark in Blacksburg was a season best and also a new personal, one that she set two weeks ago at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Her vault is currently tied for the No. 4 mark in the country.
ACC doubles team of week
Virginia Tech juniors Henrik Korsgaard and Alex Ribeiro were named the ACC Doubles Team of the Week as announced Tuesday by the league office
Korsgaard, a junior from Fredericia, Denmark, and Ribeiro, a junior from Lisbon, Portugal, had a strong showing at the Virginia Tech Invitational, and helped the Hokies to a win over Boston University (7-0). The duo’s highlight was a 6-2 win over the top-ranked doubles pair in the nation, Penn State’s Constant de la Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth.
ACC diver of week
Virginia Tech senior diver Ben Schiesl has been named the ACC Diver of the Week after helping the Hokies to wins over Cincinnati and George Washington this past weekend.
Schiesl shined in wins over Bearcats (185-108) and the Colonials (197-91). The senior from Fairfax, Virginia, won the 1-meter competition with a score of 398.05, and took second on the 3-meter after posting a 376.30, finishing just behind teammate Noah Zawadzki.
