Project Linus’ first “Blanket Day” of 2019 will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. at Grove United Methodist Church (1020 Tyler Ave.) in Radford.
The New River Valley chapter invites the community to participate in making blankets, sewing labels onto completed blankets. Project Linus blankets are for children in need of warmth and comfort.
“If you plan to drop off blankets that day, please be sure each one is labeled with your name and address (address labels are best for this),” Penny Sweet, long-time coordinator of the effort said in an announcement.
There will be cotton fabric sets and batting available for you to sew during Blanket Day on the provided sewing machines. If there are sets left at the end of the day, volunteers may take them home to sew. There will be yarn available as well. We’ll also have sewn cotton blankets that will need tacking and if you don’t know how, plenty of experts will be there to assist.
“Our fleece supply is limited, so we ask that the fleece set out at Blanket Day is used by Blanket Day participants. We won’t have enough to allow anyone to take any home,” the announcement said. “We have been running out of fleece the last few events we have held and we want to be sure to have enough for all our volunteers to work with.”
Everyone is welcome to bring some fleece to work on during Blanket Day.
“That would be great and you’re more than welcome to bring your fleece and join in the fun and fellowship of Blanket Day!” Sweet wrote.
Bring 1-1/4 yard length pieces of child-friendly prints of fleece. Blizzard or Anti-Pill fleece from Joann Fabrics is recommended – not the plush style as that sheds when it is cut.
The group decided that chili and cornbread would be nice for lunch at this time of year.
If you would like to contribute to the potluck lunch for our volunteers,
Chili (5 volunteers needed)
Cornbread (4 volunteers needed)
Cookie or Brownie tray (5 volunteers needed)
Penny will provide breakfast items, drinks, veggie trays, and paper products.
“Thanks so much in advance for supporting NRV Project Linus,” Sweet said.
Email Penny at PHS1010@aol.com to let her know what you will bring.
