Coffee with the Christiansburg Mayor
This month’s Coffee with the Mayor will be held from 9-10 a.m. at Great Road on Main (100 W. Main Street) in Christiansburg, this Saturday March 9. Come learn about your local government over coffee. The town’s budget will be the main topic of discussion and Christiansburg’s Treasurer and Finance Director, Valerie Tweedie, will be in attendance to answer questions. Copies of the town’s newly published 2017-2018 Citizen Centric Report and a summary of the town’s 2018-2019 budget will be available. Coffee with the Mayor is a monthly series aimed at generating conversations among town staff, town council and residents. Complimentary coffee will be provided.

Mount Tabor Ruritan Biscuit Breakfast
The Mount Tabor Ruritan Club will be serving up scratch-made biscuits topped with delicious sausage gravy, or with the latest batch of the club’s “world-famous” apple butter from 8 to 10 a.m.
Breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall of Slusser’s Chapel, 1543 Mount Tabor Rd, Blacksburg. This is below the Sanctuary, on the lower church parking lot level.
“This is a fundraiser for our club to help us as we serve our community, therefore, donations will be accepted for the breakfast,” states information from the club. “We will have quarts of apple butter for sale.”

Valley Voices literary showcase calls for poems and stories
Deadline for submission is March 11; event is Saturday, April 27
Submission guidelines ask for work as-yet-unpublished or presented in the NRV, poems short stories, creative non-fiction, or standalone excerpts from a longer work, and flash fiction are welcome. Typically, ten pieces are showcased from 50-100 submissions. “We don’t have a theme since the work should represent the writers; however, themes have emerged from the submissions,” co-organizer and writer Tracee de Hahn, author of the Agnes Lüthi Mysteries said.

Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting
The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stuart Horse Artillery Camp #1784 will meet on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at Ray’s Restaurant on Rt. 221, north of Floyd. Members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) are also invited to attend. Montgomery County Public Schools will be holding a community meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 14 in the School Board Office for individuals who currently hold a bachelor’s degree and may be interested in becoming licensed teachers. The deadline for submission is March 11, 2019. The event itself is Saturday, April 27th, 2019.

Edible and medicinal plants presentation
7 pm, VT’s Goodwin Hall, Room 145: Jim Chamberlain, a research scientist with the USDA Forest Service, will present on edible and medicinal plants. He is the Deputy Coordinator of the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations Research Group that focuses on Non-wood Forest Products. He is a global expert on non-timber forest products management. This event is open to the public.

Christiansburg Leaf Giveaway
April 5-April 6
The Christiansburg Public Works Department will be giving away leaves on April 5, from noon to 4 p.m., and April 6, from 8 a.m. to noon. The giveaways will be on Peppers Ferry Road, behind Walmart, near the proposed location for a park on the Truman Wilson Property. Spring Children’s Consignment Sale
Blacksburg United Methodist Church will hold its semi-annual consignment sale of children’s items from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm on Saturday, April 6, at the Christian Life Center (706 Harding Avenue) in Blacksburg. Families will be able to get great deals on gently used kids’ clothes and shoes, toys, books, games, movies, baby gear and accessories, sports equipment, maternity clothing and more. Many items are like-new (some even brand-new). Some items will be half-price between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, but you will want to shop early for the best selection! Proceeds will benefit local charities.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, new health coverage for adults will cover more people. If you work in retail, construction, childcare, landscaping, food service or many of the jobs that don’t offer health insurance, you may be able to get low-cost health insurance that includes regular preventive care and treatment for chronic health conditions. Montgomery Museum volunteer opportunities
A number of volunteer opportunities are available at the Montgomery Museum.
Docent: training is provided for individuals to staff the front office, answer calls, make sales, and interpret the history of the museum; events planning: planning and implementation of our major events annually, including Heritage Day, Mountains of Music, h’Arts on Main, Cruisin’ Christiansburg; Working with any of the committees: (Membership, Marketing, Events/Fundraising, Building Expansion, Building and Grounds); research with genealogy projects: working with the genealogy team; gardening: working in the garden with Virginia Master Gardeners.
