Christiansburg High School (100 Independence Boulevard) is bountiful with entertainment options this spring This calendar showcases the drama, comedy and musical talents of CHS students and staff from March to May.
A wonderful night of music is planned for March 29-30 by the CHS Music Department. “Night on the Silver Screen” will offer music from favorite movies performed by students in the Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble and Camarata, a small chamber orchestra. Joining the instrumental music will be singing by the Men’s Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and the Musical Theatre Choir.
Performances will be held in the CHS auditorium at 7 p.m. on those two nights. Show tickets are $7.00 and free for children under three years old. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at $5.00 each and chances to win donated prizes. These fun musical nights support the music educational programs at CHS.
The weekend of April 12-14, the CHS Blue Demon Drama Department will present Monty Python’s Edukational Show, a collection of sketches, songs, and animations from Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The performances will offer up the genius of Monty Python in a hilarious 80-minute musical revue. Enjoy “Cheese Shop,” “Argument Clinic,” “Gumby Flower Arranging,” “Lumberjack Song,” “Dead Parrot,” “Galaxy Song” and many more Python gems, with a decidedly irreverent “edukational” theme.
Monty Python’s Flying Circus was a British surreal comedy group that created a sketch comedy show that aired on the British Broadcasting Corporation between 1969 and 1974. Monty Python has been referred to as not only one of the more enduring icons of 1970s British popular culture, but also an important moment in the evolution of television comedy. Monty Python actors include Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin wrote this Edukational Show. Makala Witten, drama teacher, said, “Very silly stuff, and oh so much fun!”
Tickets are $7.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and seniors for the 7 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday in the CHS auditorium.
The CHS Musical Theater has been working hard in rehearsals to perform their annual spring musical production of Disney’s Newsies on May 10-12. Newsies was a 1992 musical comedy-drama movie produced by Walt Disney Pictures. It was based loosely on the New York City Newsboy’s Strike of 1899 and featured twelve original songs by Alan Menken. The film inspired a Broadway musical in 2012 and won three Tony Awards.
CHS student actors, singers and musicians will be performing at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday as well as offer a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday for Mother’s Day. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids between four and seventeen years old.
