Three student-athletes from Auburn High School have signed letters of intents to continue their careers next year in college. Trevor Miles (baseball, Emory & Henry) made the announcement Wednesday in the school’s library in front of family, coaches, teammates and friends. He was joined by Andrew Hill (football, Ferrum) and Peyton Hurd (cross country, Radford University).
Miles said he chose E&H because his father had gone there. This past season, he hit .484 with eight doubles, a triple, 27 RBIs, 24 runs scored and six stolen bases. Miles was named All-Mountain Empire District and All-Region C first team at first base.
His coach Eric Altizer called him a team leader who has had an outstanding career at Auburn. As a sophomore, Miles helped the Eagles to a state championship.
Miles hopes to major in sports management at E&H. His long-term goal is to be an athletic director of coach.
Hill is headed to Ferrum to play football.
He said Ferrum felt like home and also hopes for a career as a coach, even planning to come back to his former school as an assistant and then as head coach. But in the meantime, his goal is to make the Dean’s List and an academic All-American.
Hill plans to major in physical education.
Hurd was initially was going to run at E&H, but a late offer from RU changed his path. “I initially planned to go to Emory and Henry college, and I was very excited about it. Coach Bradley at Radford contacted me and offered me a spot on the Radford University team. I went on a tour with my parents and was very impressed with everything the school had to offer. I am very excited to run at the division 1 level.”
He has been a four-time state champion in cross-country, being named all-state three times.
Auburn track coach Mark Carper said Hurd has repeatedly demonstrated he came come through when the pressure is on and shows his best effort.
“He has helped to build a great tradition at Auburn High School,” Carper said.
When Hurd looks back at the past accomplishments, he sings the praises of his teammates and coaches.
“I want to be a part of the state record team in the 4×800 meter relay in outdoor track. It has been great to have such a great opportunity to have great runners and coaches around me pushing me to be better at what I do and to be a part of 6 total state championship titles,” Hurd said.
For now, he has not decided on a major at RU.
