Virginia Tech Alternative Transportation celebrated “Bike to Campus Day” this week. Manning tables scattered across campus, the group talked bikes at the Hokie Bike Hub, Drillfield, outside of McBryde, and by the Duckpond Gazebo from 9:00am to 4:00pm. The effort handed out 50 new Bontrager helmets to people need one and raffling off 50-60 Bike to Campus Day t-shirts.
The university group repairs bikes at the Hokie Bike Hub all year helping people bike.
“Last year we had 250 plus visitors to our tables,” Chitti Raju, alternative transportation specialist for Virginia Tech said. “Our department puts on this event to encourage people to bike in Blacksburg, and to reward those who
already do!”
Raju, a VT biochemistry graduate used to live in Washington D.C. where he
relied on a bicycle as his main form of transportation in the city.
“Bike to Campus is meant to be a fun event that can help get the word out about cycling and the services Tech offers commuters,” he said.
