Gilbert joins Concord staff
Concord University head football coach Paul Price has announced the hiring of Nick Gilbert as the program’s offensive line coach.
Gilbert comes to CU after a coaching stint at the University of Louisville where he worked on the same staff as current Concord defensive coordinator during the 2017 season.
The former three-time letter winner at fellow Division II school Tiffin University in Ohio is originally from Syracuse, New York. Before playing for the Dragons from 2009-11, Gilbert started his playing career Erie Community College.
After earning a degree in Homeland Security from Tiffin, Gilbert began his coaching career at Division III Heidelberg University before elevating to coaching stops at the University of Idaho, the University of Memphis and finally to Louisville.
Concord sets records
The Concord University women’s track and field team had a strong weekend at the Fred Hardy Invite hosted by the University of Richmond at Robins Stadium Friday and Saturday.
The 4×400-meter relay team improved its conference-best time as the quartet of senior Taylor Hamm, senior Emilee Henry, sophomore Josea Smith and freshman Jada Strachan combined to run 4:00.31 and finish fourth.
Senior Kaylin Kessinger just missed a personal-record time in the 3,000-meter run as she clocked a time of 11:37, good enough for ninth in the event. Elsewhere in distance events, senior Bailey Knowles from Christiansburg ran the fastest 5,000-meters time in the MEC this season (18:21) as she placed 15th. Fellow senior Karleigh Thompson came in 19th with a time of 19:27.
Quintas player of week
Radford University freshman Beatriz Mosquera Quintas was named the Big South Player of the Week for the second time this spring after nearly winning her second individual title this month.
Mosquera Quintas captured the runner-up trophy this past Tuesday at the two-day French Broad Collegiate Invitational, which was held at the Cliffs at Walnut Cove, a par 71, 5,897-yard course.
The native of La Coruna, Spain carded a team-best 145 (+3, 73-72), just two strokes behind champion Bianca Porta (South Carolina Beaufort), who recorded a 143 (+1, 73-72).
Just two weeks earlier, Mosquera Quintas won the Benbow Invitational, which was held at Blue Sky Golf Club in Jacksonville, Florida.
Hokie All-American
Freshman Antani Ivanov wrapped up the 2019 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships on a high note for the Hokies, claiming All-America Honorable Mention honors on the final night of competition in Austin, Texas.
Ivanov broke his own record in the 200 fly during the morning prelims, swimming a time of 1:41.06 to finish ninth. In the evening finals, Ivanov placed 12th with a time of 1:41.48. Fellow freshman Blake Manoff also competed in the 200 fly, placing 31st with a 1:43.88.
Jones claims shot title
Wrapping up three meets on Saturday, the Virginia Tech track and field teams saw thrower Tyson Jones win an event tittle, while Chauncey Chambers and Pavla Kuklova both finished second in their respective events.
Jones placed first in the shot put at the Florida Relays with his throw of 18.36 meters (60 feet, 3 inches). That mark was a new lifetime best for the Goodyear, Arizona native and moved him to No. 5 on Tech’s outdoor shot list.
The men’s 4×100-meter relay team of Jacory Patterson, Cole Beck from Blacksburg, Michael Davenport and Joseph Tay tallied a time of 40.62 seconds, while the women’s 4×100 relay team of Kennedy Dennis, Nykah Smith, Arlicia Bush and Kanajzae Brown ran a time of 45.64 seconds
Breaking school records has become a common occurrence when it comes to freshman Jacory Patterson. The Colombia, South Carolina native broke school records in the 200, 300 and 400 meters during the indoor season and he continued his record-breaking streak in his first meet of the outdoor season, breaking Hillard Sumner’s 1996 400-meter record (46.73) with his time of 45.76 seconds to finish second at the Florida Relays.
In the 100-meter dash, Sophomore Kennedy Dennis collected a time of 11.76, while Cole Beck collected himself after a bad start to cross the finish line in a time of 10.48 seconds to finish 11th among collegiate athletes.
