Rotary Club of Christiansburg-Blacksburg presented its 2018-2019 Youth Awards to Montgomery County Public School students at the club’s meeting last week.
Juniors and seniors from Auburn, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Eastern Montgomery High Schools were recognized in the areas of academic achievement, career and technical education, and ethics.
Academic Achievement Awards were presented to the top five percent of the junior class based on grade point average to: Talon Booth, Victoria Boyd, Adam Downs, Anna Haas, and Margaret Tomlin of Auburn High School; Saanvi Acharya, Brandon Xu Fan, Haley Sara Freeborn, Joel Isaac Hodges, Clayton David Jennings, Margaret Jean Lazar, Melissa Meng, Kayla Joy Monaghan, Claire Macnamara Morton, Dena Saghai Maroof, Sophia Alejandra Sobrado, Vishvesha Krishna Sridhar, Kaitlynn Faye Wolfe, Jessica Anne Wysocki, and Alice W Xu of Blacksburg High School; Bryce Dean Carlson, Vivian Daniela Collins, Leah May Greiner, Jessica Lauren Kniskern, Garrett Davis Kuchan, Jacey Louise Lancaster, Bethany Renee Scott, Rhea Faith Shepherd, Morgan Paige Smith, Matthew Lee Stuart, Kyle James Walker, Jackson Thomas Waters, and Abigail Hailey Witt of Christiansburg High School; and Allison Noelle Jones, Kaitie Fae Woods, and Russell Cole Shepherd of Eastern Montgomery High School.
Career and Technical Education Awards were presented to two seniors from each school, nominated by their teachers, who have achieved excellence in their chosen field of vocational education. Hunter Quesenberry and Kathryn West of Auburn High School; Fiona Darrow McMichael and Sarah Lynn Sadler of Blacksburg High School; Cloe Anne Taylor and Alexander James Aenea Watty of Christiansburg High School; and Roxanna Luviano and Roger Merritt Ball, Jr. of Eastern Montgomery High School received this award.
Rotary Code of Ethics Awards were presented to a senior boy and girl at each school nominated by their teachers. Those students were chosen as best exemplifying the traits delineated in the Rotary Four-Way Test: “Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”
Ashleigh Givens and Keith Reed of Auburn High School; Michael Tristan Hurst and Brooke Nichole Anderson of Blacksburg High School; Madison Jane Adams and Adam Ray Caudle of Christiansburg High School; and Frank Jeffrey Woods and MacKenzy Lynn Hopkins of Eastern Montgomery High School received this award.
Founded in 1923, the motto of the Rotary Club of Christiansburg-Blacksburg is “Service Above Self”. The Rotary Youth Awards, Professional Leadership and Citizen of the Year Awards, semi-annual blood screening event, youth development programs, and community projects as well as participation in Rotary International programs like PolioPlus and Group Study Exchanges exemplify this motto.
