Same results, different year and different classification is exactly what the Blacksburg High School girls’ track team came back home Saturday evening. The Lady Bruins won their 11th state championship with trophies being split between Class 3 and Class 4. The team moved up to the higher classification last season because of a rise in student enrollment.
While the competition changed, the results did not.
Kaitlynn Wolfe started things off for Blacksburg Saturday with a victory in the 3,200 meters.
In the team competition, Blacksburg had 53 points to outdistance Loudoun Valley with 49 points. The Blacksburg boys finished second with 54 points to Loudoun Valley’s 87.
Tiquest Terry recorded a 100 meter in 11.08 to bring home gold for Blacksburg. He, then, turned around and helped the 400-meter relay team to another victory. His relay teammates included: Cole Dunlap, Thomas Coffey and David Quesenberry. Terry then completed his great day with a second in the high jump. Coffey would finish first in the 55-hurdles and second in the 110-hurdles.
Meanwhile in Class 3, Christiansburg High School had two state champions in Rachel Lloyd (pole vault) and Ethan Mills (1,600 meters).
The Christiansburg girls were second with 54 points, behind Heritage with 84. The boys’ team were fifth as Tabb won the competition.
In Class 1, the Auburn girls finished second with 102 points. PH-Glade Spring won the state title with 114 points. The Auburn 3,200-relay team took gold to start the meet with Hailey Wade, Lilly Messner, Anna Kuchan and Caitlin Dominy, who also finished second individually in the 1,600 and 800.
Auburn’s Jessica Musselman claimed first in the triple jump.
Eastern Montgomery finished tied for 21st in the girls’ competition and 27th on the boys’ side of the track. Auburn, meanwhile, also tied for second in the boys’ competition.
In Class 2, the Radford boys were 34th and the girls were ninth.
