Two years ago, the administrators at Eastern Montgomery High School decided now was the right time to start a girls’ varsity soccer program. Not only did it take off, but it has succeeded quicker than anyone could ever imagine.
Last season, they finished 13-2, while this year, they are 13-2 and coming off a 2-1 victory over Auburn for the Region 1C title.
Whittney Shaver took over the program shortly before the season and beating Auburn was huge mental victory.
“I thought we matched up with them well in the regular season but had a few mental lapses that led to them taking a game advantage (two losses during the regular season). We finally got over that hump in the regional championship game and we are building off of that success,” she said.
Shave feels the hard work the girls have put in in their younger years through the rec leagues and travel is now paying off in their high school careers. “They continue to work each day to better themselves and their teammates. I’m excited for the future of this team.”
The team is excited about the state playoffs.
“By the time you get to this point, all of the teams are equally skilled and have a chance to win each game. We are going into states healthy with high hopes of riding our recent success to the end,” Shaver continued.
The future is bright, according to the first year coach.
