The News Messenger and the Radford News Journal is happy to welcome summer intern Mercedes Scales to the team. The Radford senior pursuing an interdisciplinary studies major with an English and journalism concentration.
“It’s important to get real-world experience as an intern because it allows you to get hands-on experience in your field,” Scales said in her interview this spring.
A native of Christiansburg, Scales will be reporting on the region’s dynamic popular culture and has already written about the closing of Blacksburg landmark Sycamore Deli. She’ll also be covering the school board beat.
“I hope after my internship experience, I will have strengthened my writing and communication skills,” she said.
