The Kiwanis Club of Christiansburg continued its School Supplies Program recently when club members Kelly Olsen, a teacher at Christiansburg Middle School, and Ernie Wade presented a Walmart gift card for $550 to the school’s principal, Micah Mefford.
The ongoing program began several years ago at all Christiansburg schools to serve students in need. When the funds on the cards are depleted, the club delivers a new card for $550, $500 of which comes from the Kiwanis Club. Walmart provides the $50 balance.
The cards are used to purchase school supplies or clothing for students who cannot afford to buy their own.
Funding for service projects such as the School Supplies Program are generated by fund raising events such as the Kiwanis Wilderness Trail Festival. This year’s festival is Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Christiansburg.
