Marshall Kevin Hamden, 62, of Radford, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019 at his daughter’s home in the arms of his children.
Marshall was born in Covington, Virginia on February 13, 1957 and grew up in Galax, Virginia. He graduated from Galax High School in 1975 and went on to the University of Tennessee, where he graduated with a business degree in 1979. In 1982, he married his first wife, Jeana Lee James, and they welcomed two children; a daughter, Janiele Von Evelyn Hamden and a son, Marshall Ryan Hamden. After their separation, he moved to Radford, and in 1988 he married Lori Jo Rilling and they welcomed a son, Jordan Edward Hamden, in 1991.
Marshall was a successful businessman in Radford, partnering with his younger brother, Matthew Edward Hamden. Together they owned Central Market, Lee Ralph’s Sporting Goods, Alleghany Inn, and M&M Realty. He also worked for SWIFT transportation and Highlander Root & Herb. Marshall was an avid outdoorsman and lover of nature. He enjoyed college football games (GO VOLS!), fires, music, fishing, reading, movies, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. While he was a man of few words, his thoughts were vast and deep, as was his heart. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a twinkle of mischief in his eye. The values and morals he instilled in his children, and their commitment to honoring them, will be his legacy. Marshall’s absence will be deeply felt by his closest family and friends, and his freedom from suffering will be cherished and celebrated.
He is survived by his three children, Janiele Von Evelyn Hamden, Marshall Ryan Hamden, Jordan Edward Hamden, his two grandchildren, London Von Thomas and Kinsley Noelle Thomas, his siblings Michael Hamden, Melanie Vafaei-Avval, Melissa Hamden, Mathew Hamden, his cousins Thomas Cook, Dave Cook, Chris Cook, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, JoAnne Evelyn Hamden, Odell Edward Hamden, and his brother, Madison Hamden.
The family would like to thank Carilion Family Hospice of the New River Valley, the nurses at New River Valley Medical Center in Radford, Virginia in the progressive care unit, Dr. Matthew McCarthy of Blacksburg, Virginia, and close friends and community members for their kindness and support.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sept. 28, 2019, from 6 – 9 p.m. at Preston’s at the River Course, 8400 River Course Drive, Radford, VA 24141.
