Hokie swimmers down GW
The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the 2019-20 season Saturday in decisive fashion, defeating George Washington on both sides. Tech’s men claimed a 203-87 win while the women swam past the Colonials by a score of 208-87.
The Virginia Tech men won 13 events, starting with the 200 Medley Relay as Sam Tornqvist, AJ Pouch, Blake Manoff and Thomas Hallock turned in a time of 1:30.58.
The Tech women also won 13 events in the first meet of the season and got off to the same start as the men, winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.23 off swims from Margarita Ryan, Joelle Vereb, Kayla Purcell and Abby Larson.
Maroon beats orange
Maroon rolled to a 23-11 victory over Orange at the 2019 Intra squad Wrestle-off in Cassell Coliseum Friday night.
The exhibition dual signals the start of the regular season for the Hokies. Maroon won six of the nine matches that counted toward its team score, including tech falls from Mitch Moore and John Borst.
The match also included a 1-1 draw between former Christiansburg wrestler Hunter Bolen and national team member Mekhi Lewis.
The Hokies return to action Saturday, Nov. 2 against eighth-ranked Missouri in Cassell Coliseum.
Concord cross country third at championship
The Concord University men’s cross-country team placed third at the Mountain East Conference Championship Saturday morning at Oglebay Resort’s Crispin Golf Course.
Charleston was the team champion with 20 points. Davis & Elkins scored 45 points to claim second while CU checked in with 89 points, 11 better than West Liberty.
The Mountain Lions put all five scoring runners in the top 25 led by freshman Nate Leichner who finished sixth with a time of 27:07. Leichner was the top freshman at the meet and was named MEC Freshman of the Year at the post-race awards ceremony. The Christiansburg native was also All-MEC First Team.
RU youth basketball clinic
The Radford University women’s basketball team, in cooperation with the Christiansburg Recreation Department, will hold a youth clinic on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 5-13. Please pre-register by November 1 at the recreation center. For more information, call 382-2349.
Wake kickoff
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that Virginia Tech’s home football contest against Wake Forest will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Lane Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN2 or ACC Network.
