Seton Hall suspends coach
Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard was suspended for two games for tampering with a transfer, according to reports. The New York Post cited sources indicating that the transfer in question was former Syracuse center Taurean Thompson.
According to the Post, Seton Hall issued the suspension as a result of an NCAA investigation into allegations of tampering. The NCAA’s investigation is continuing. Willard sat out Seton Hall’s exhibition game Thursday against Misericordia and will sit out the Pirates’ regular-season opener against Wagner Tuesday.
Willard had been mentioned as a finalist for the Virginia Tech job before Mike Young was hired earlier this year.
ACC diver of week
Virginia Tech sophomore Noah Zawadzki has been named the ACC Men’s Diver of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Zawadzki took wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events over the weekend. In the 1-meter he turned in a score of 375.68 to hit a zone qualifying mark. In addition, the tally places him fifth on Virginia Tech’s all-time scoring list in the event. On the 3-meter board, Zawadzki beat the zone qualifying mark by more than 80 points, putting up a score of 404.33.
Concord cross-country men fifth in region
Coming off their fifth-place finish at the Mountain East Conference Championship, the Concord University men’s cross–country team was voted fifth in this week’s United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association Atlantic Regional Poll.
Charleston remained number one after winning the MEC Championship. Edinboro was second after its win at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship. Davis & Elkins, Lock Haven and Concord completed the top five. Shippensburg, East Stroudsburg and Kutztown followed while West Liberty and Slippery Rock were new to the poll at nine and 10.
Three RU players sweep awards
Following a pair of 2-0 shutouts last week and clinching the No. 3 spot in the Big South Tournament, it was no surprise to see the Big South Conference recognize three players from Radford University’s women’s soccer team on Monday in the weekly awards.
Emily Dunn, Nelia Perez and Mia Wood each garnered player of the week honors for their outstanding play on the pitch. Dunn was named Defensive Player of the Week, while Wood was tabbed as Freshman of the Week and Perez earned Attacking Player of the Week.
RU’s Flowers freshman of week
Volleyball player Hailey Flowers was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for her standout performances against Big South Conference foes USC Upstate and UNC Asheville this past weekend, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Flowers played in all six sets and tallied 18 kills between the two matches. She also had four block assists and eight digs. Her hitting percentages in both matches were notable as well, at .316 and .389.
The Highlanders took both contests in back-to-back three–set sweeps.
