All-Access RU athletics
Radford University Athletics has added a new feature to serve fans across the state of Virginia, as the inaugural Highlanders All Access Podcast launched on Wednesday afternoon. The new podcast format allows Highlanders fans to keep up with Radford Athletics programs throughout the year.
Fans can listen to each show on demand on their Smartphones, Bluetooth speakers at home or in the car and on desktop computers. The podcast will feature the voice of the Highlanders, Rick Watson, for an inside look at Radford Athletics with coaches’ interviews, analysis and insight into various programs. The inaugural show previews the upcoming 2019-20 Radford men’s and women’s basketball programs with both squads tabbed to finish atop the Big South Conference Preseason Poll announced Tuesday.
This podcast subscription is FREE for all Highlander fans to enjoy. The podcast can be found on the Fan Zone page under Highlanders All Access on the Radford Athletics website. It can also be heard on various media outlets such as Apple, Google Play, Spotify, iHeart Radio and Stitcher by searching for Highlanders All Access.
Hokie wrestlers pull upset
Virginia Tech’s 16th-ranked wrestling squad opened the 2019-20 season with a convincing 29-10 victory over ninth-ranked Missouri as the Hokies won the final four matches to earn the win Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
In another top-15 match at 184, Christiansburg High alum Hunter Bolen returned to the mat after a redshirt season and defeated Dylan Wisman. Bolen used two takedowns in the first and a reversal in the third to take a four-point lead with almost two minutes of riding time. However, Wisman tied it up at 9-9 before the final horn, but Bolen won with 1:22 of riding time to put Tech back up 10-7.
Tech swimming and diving men pick up wins
The No. 24 Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving team picked up a pair of big wins this weekend as the Hokies downed No. 8 Ohio State 185-168 and Penn State, 205.5-145.5.
Tech’s women faltered to both, falling to No. 24 Ohio State, 247-106 and Penn State, 216.5-136.5.
Seufer cross country champ
Virginia Tech cross-country runner Peter Seufer became a back-to-back conference championship winner Friday morning. Seufer blew away the field at the 2019 ACC Cross-Country Championships held at the Buford Meredith Cross-Country Course on Virginia Tech’s campus.
Seufer, a redshirt senior from Lynchburg, won the 2018 ACC title by out-sprinting Wake Forest’s Zach Facioni to the finish line in the final 1,000 meters. There was no showdown this time around, as Seufer went straight to the front and ran away from the 134-runner field. He finished the 8K course in a time of 23 minutes, 42.7 seconds and won by a whopping 39 seconds over second-place finisher Yared Nuguse of Notre Dame.
RU cross-country runners finish in top 5
The women’s team placed fourth and the men’s team placed fifth at the Big South Championships Saturday hosted by Campbell. Radford also picked up a handful of Big South awards after the race with Caitlin Apps winning Freshman of the Year while Annsley Eckert and Joe Limo picked up All-Academic awards.
The men raced first on the 8K course, with sophomore Limo finishing first for the Highlanders in 16th place with a time of 26:09. Just behind him by 17 seconds was Callum Wilson placing 22nd for the Highlanders with Juan Cisneros not far behind placing 28th.
Freshman Zach Worthman led the first years on the squad with a time of 27:25, placing 35th. Overall, the team finished fifth in a field of 11 Big-South squad, with 143 points, which was just 36 points behind fourth place.
On the women’s side at the 5K course, freshman Apps competed for a top spot in the conference and finished third with a time of 17:46. Her time was the best of any freshman in the field, and fellow freshman Rachel Millirons was just behind her, placing 13th with a time of 18:45.
