RU’s Jones on watch list as top player
Radford University redshirt junior guard Carlik Jones has been named to the 2019-20 Lou Henson Award Watch List, CollegeInsider.com announced on Tuesday. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major player in Division I College Basketball.
In 2018-19 Jones was an NABC District 3 First-Team selection after averaging 15.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. His 5.8 assists per contest ranked second in the Big South a year ago. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native also sat second in assist/turnover ratio (2.3), second in steals per game (1.7) and tied for fourth in field goal percentage (.463) in the conference last season.
The Big South Preseason Player of the Year ranks tenth in program history with 294 career assists and is 89 points shy of becoming the 32nd player in Highlander hisotry to record 1,000 points. Last season, Jones was second on the single-season charts in assists with 181.
Dieblo to wear Beamer jersey
Head coach Justin Fuente announced Thursday that safety Divine Deablo will wear Frank Beamer’s No. 25 jersey today in Virginia Tech’s game vs. Wake Forest. It will mark the second time that the redshirt junior has earned the honor.
Deablo (6-3, 223) posted five solo tackles at Notre Dame Saturday and had a 98-yard fumble return for a touchdown, the longest-ever against the Irish and the longest in Virginia Tech history since 1987. The fumble return marked his first career touchdown. The free safety also recorded an interception, his first of the season.
On the season, Deablo ranks second on the squad with 48 tackles (26 solo). He has also three tackles for loss and has forced a fumble.
ACC honors two soccer Hokies
Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference and voted on by the league’s 14 head coaches, the 2019 Women’s Soccer ACC All-Conference teams feature 41 of the league’s student-athletes and includes two Virginia Tech Hokies: goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, a first-team honoree, and defender Kelsey Irwin, a third-team choice.
With their 2019 selections, both Hokies repeat their honors from a year ago, as each was named to their respective team after the 2018 season.
McGlynn, who was named to the preseason All-ACC team in both 2018 and 2019 and was voted the 2018 ACC All-Conference First Team goalkeeper, enjoyed an even more successful season than her junior campaign. She started all 18 matches during the regular season and has played every single minute (1,658:37) which has run her consecutive minutes played streak to 5,165:20 (55 straight matches).
The senior from Jacksonville, Fla., has stopped 73 shots for an 83.9 save percentage, which is currently the second-best mark ever in a single season at the school (Karen Crawley, 86.8, 1997). Meanwhile, her 0.76 goals allowed average is also currently second-best (Caroline Kelly, 0.69, 2014), her 10 shutouts are tied for second (Dayle Colpitts, 11, 2013) and her 12 wins are third all-time.
