CHS grad runs at Concord
Freshman Nate Leichner and sophomore Isaac Prather earned All-Atlantic Region as the Concord University men’s cross country team finished fifth Saturday morning at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship on the West Branch Cross Country Course.
CU scored 174 points in the meet. Charleston, Edinboro and Davis & Elkins were the advancing teams from the region to the NCAA National Championship.
Prather crossed in seventh place in a time of 31:58 for the 1,000-meter course to be selected to the all-region team for the first time in his career. Coming off winning MEC Freshman of the Year, Leichner came through in 32:28 to finish 19th.
E&H downs Guilford
The Emory & Henry College Football Team (6-3, 5-2 ODAC) got back on track Saturday with a 38-22 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win at Guilford College (2-7, 1-6 ODAC).
Senior placekicker Matt Seals (Rogersville, Tenn.) became the all-time leader in ODAC history for extra-points made as he converted all five of his PATs on the afternoon. Seals now has 158 PAT’s in his career and with today’s scores now holds the E&H record for extra points in a season (44).
Concord stymies Lockhaven
The Concord University women’s basketball team outscored Lock Haven 25-5 in the second quarter on its way to an 86-60 win over the Bald Eagles Saturday afternoon at the MEC-PSAC Challenge at Joe Retton Arena.
The Mountain Lions (1-1) were down 17-14 after the first quarter, but stifled LHU (0-2) in the second quarter. CU scored the first 11 points of the second period before Lock Haven got on the board at the 5:31 mark of the quarter.
Sophomore guard Maggie Guynn had eight of her game-high 19 points in the first four minutes of the second to spark the Concord run.
The Mountain Lions shot 50 percent (27-for-54) for the game while holding LHU to 27.4 percent (20-for-73). Guynn led five Concord players in double figures.
Hokie Open in cross country
Strong performances by David Whitfield and Ava Hassebrock headlined the performances of the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s cross-country teams, as both squads wrapped up their home schedules with the Hokie Open held at the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course on Friday.
Both runners finished in third place in their respective races. Whitfield ran the 6K course in a time of 18 minutes, 52.8 seconds, which was a personal-best time for that distance. He came in a little more than 15 seconds behind winner Mike Ungvarsky of Duke. Sam Labahn, running unattached, came in second with a time of 18:48.3.
Hokie swimmers down Queens College
The Virginia Tech men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams claimed wins on Friday night over Queens College. Tech’s women defeated DII top-ranked Queens, 166-116, and had the 189-105 win over Richmond. The men’s team downed Queens 173-86.
RU’s Wilkinson All-District soccer
Radford University men’s soccer defender Jacob Wilkinson has been selected to the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-District Team, the organization announced on Thursday afternoon.
Wilkinson, a redshirt junior from Frederick, Md., has a cumulative GPA of 4.0 as a finance major. On the pitch, he has set career highs across the board, making 10 starts and appearing in 11 contests for a total of 897 minutes.
Wilkinson also has four shots this season and has helped anchor a backline that advanced to the Big South Tournament. Wilkinson was a first-team Academic All District selection for District 3, which consists of schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
RU’s Jones on watch list
Redshirt junior guard Carlik Jones of Radford University has been named to the 2019-20 Lou Henson Award Watch List, CollegeInsider.com has announced. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top mid-major player in Division I College Basketball.
In 2018-19 Jones was an NABC District 3 First-Team selection after averaging 15.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. His 5.8 assists per contest ranked second in the Big South a year ago. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native also sat second in assist/turnover ratio (2.3), second in steals per game (1.7) and tied for fourth in field goal percentage (.463) in the conference last season.
The 2019-20 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced in April 2020 in Atlanta, site of the men’s Division I NCAA Basketball Championship.
Hokie wrestlers on the mound
Virginia Tech wrestling improved to 2-0 in duals this season after a 21-18 win over No. 21 Northwestern at the first ever Mat on the Mound. John Borst won a major decision in the last match of the day to secure the win for the 11th-ranked Hokies at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
Joey Prata got the Hokies off on the right foot with a 2-0 decision over Mike DeAugustino in the first match. Prata had an escape in the second period and held on to riding time to give Tech a 3-0 lead.
No. 17 Mitch Moore pinned his second opponent in as many duals. The sophomore got the fall over Jack Tolin in 2:13.
Redshirt senior David McFadden had another major decision. McFadden, ranked fourth in the country, defeated Northwestern’s Shayne Oster 18-6 to give the Hokies crucial bonus points.
Christiansburg native and 10th-ranked Hunter Bolen improved to 2-0 on the year with a major decision. Bolen had four takedowns to beat Jack Jessen 15-3.
With Tech down 18-17, John Borst got his second major decision of the year 9-0 over Jack Heyob to secure the 21-18 win for the Hokies. Borst had three takedowns and almost three minutes of riding time.
