A large group of peaceful protestors knelt or sat near the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and observed a time of silence Wednesday in memory of George Floyd. Floyd was an African-American man who was killed by police during an arrest in Minneapolis on May 25. Some at the downtown Christiansburg rally appeared to be praying; others wiped away tears. Many held signs and some had on shirts and masks protesting police brutality and supporting the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Organizers later led the crowd by calling out the names of people of color who have died while in police custody. Police blocked off traffic to allow the crowd to march along Franklin Street and gather at the sheriff’s office. One officer offered bottled water to some of the demonstrators.
