Gertrude V. Nicosia died Tuesday evening, Sept. 8, 2020.
She was 97 years old, but mostly 98, because had she lived three more weeks she would have celebrated her 98th birthday.
Gert died in her sleep and without pain under hospice care in the home of her granddaughter, Samantha Brooks, in Riner. At the time of her death, she was surrounded by her family in the area: her daughter, Delores, son-in-law George, daughter-in-law Mimi from New York, granddaughters Samantha, Jerusha and Aimee and great-granddaughter, Ashley.
Gert is survived by her daughter, Delores McDowell, of Christiansburg; her two step-sons, James and Jeffery Nicosia both of the Gloversville/Broadalbin area in New York; daughter-in-law Melissa Nicosia, and son-in-law, George McDowell; grandchildren Jennifer Taylor, Kristin Schur, James Nicosia, Nicole Krawczeski, Jeffery Nicosia, Lindsey Zucker, Samantha Brooks, Jerusha Brooks, Kimberly McDowell and Laura McDowell and numerous great-grandchildren. Much of her family is in the Gloversville/Broadalbin area of New York, but others are in the Riner/Christiansburg area..
Upon cremation, Gertrude will be buried in Gloversville, N.Y., beside her beloved Anthony (Tony) Nicosia, who preceded her in death in August 2008. A graveside memorial gathering will await the spring of 2021 and hopefully, the end of the pandemic.
