Bringing the Inside Out – Creating Outdoor Living Spaces
Since there are no signs of COVID-19 disappearing anytime soon, The VT Hahn Garden is beginning to work on a series of online events. The first event is being co-hosted by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences on Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 7 – 8 p.m. The Hahn Horticulture Garden is working with two distinguished VT alumni, Steve Grigg ’77, former Owner of Grigg Design and Mike Hildebrand ’74, Owner of James River Nurseries, to host a virtual event that will feature tips for creating outdoor living spaces and expanding usable living space into one’s backyard. Everyone is spending more time at home right now, so why not give yourselves some outdoor options? Steve and Mike will share some of their favorite projects and Scott Douglas, the Director of the Hahn Horticulture Garden, will discuss areas in the Garden that illustrate design elements you could incorporate into your own landscape.

Fall Waterway Clean-up Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for the Clean Valley Council’s fall waterways clean-up; 8 a.m. to noon. This is a surf and turf event, so volunteers may choose to work in their own neighborhoods, a park, or a special site if they can’t work near a stream or a river. Small fries certainly should not be working on the rivers, but they can help in a park or by a small stream. Supplies are provided. To volunteer, download a registration form at clleanups@cleanvalley.org. and mail it to the Clean Valley Council, 1327 Grandin Rd. SW, Roanoke VA 34015 or PO Box 3325 Roanoke, Va. 24015.
Christiansburg Fall Clean-up Begins
Town of Christiansburg will host its annual Fall Cleanup from Oct. 3-16. Town will collect special items placed out at the curb. Special materials must be placed out on the resident’s regular garbage collection day. Special collection trucks may run behind schedule due to volume but will attempt to follow the regular solid waste pickup schedule. No charge for items picked up during this time. There will be a charge assessed for items placed out after Oct. 16. During Fall Cleanup, all residents are strongly encouraged to move any items away from the street that are not intended for pickup (i.e. basketball goals, lawn and gardening equipment, personal cans or containers, etc.). Please move all personal property back from the street. Any containers or personal cans left at the street will be removed with cleanup items unless clearly marked “do not remove.” The Town will not be responsible for any items left at or near the street that residents did not intend to have hauled away. Residents are encouraged to call Public Works at (540) 382-1151 for clarification before placing out questionable items. Information can also be found on the Town website at www.christiansburg.org/cleanupFAQ or by calling Town Hall at 382-6120.
