Radford University golfers Andrew Kennedy and Nicholas Taliaferro, both juniors, Sunday staged a comeback to win the 55th Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Four-Ball Championship at Poplar Grove Golf Club.
The Radford duo won the event by three strokes, finishing at 18-under par. Their score of 126 for the tournament tied the record for the lowest all-time score in the event’s history.
They shook off a pair of bogeys on holes three and four in Saturday’s opening round by recording birdies on holes five, six, eight and nine to make the turn at 2-under. They then birdied the first three holes on the back nine and closed the opening round at 6-under.
Sunday, Kennedy and Taliaferro shot the best round of the tournament. Entering the day four strokes off the lead, they birdied 12 of the 18 holes on the course on their way to a bogey-free round of 12-under par (60), two shots better than any other round in the tournament.
This was the first VSGA title for both Taliaferro and Kennedy. It is also the first top-five finish by a Highlander in a VSGA event since Kennedy earned a runner-up finish in the 105th VSGA Amateur in 2018.
