Former Virginia Tech linebacker Tremaine Edmunds received his second straight Pro Bowl nod Monday after helping the Buffalo Bills clinch their first AFC West title since 1995.
At Tech, Edmunds won the 2017 General Douglas MacArthur Memorial Award as the top collegiate player from Virginia. The Norfolk Sports Club honored him at its 73rd Annual Norfolk Sports Club Jamboree.
Frank Beamer presented the honor to Edmunds at the event while Herm Edwards, former head coach of the New York Jets and the current head coach at Arizona State University, served as the jamboree’s keynote speaker.
Edmunds earned third-team All-America honors from the Associated Press and first-team All-ACC accolades after turning in his second straight 100-tackle campaign for the Hokies in 2017. He finished the season ranked sixth in the ACC with 109 total tackles. His 60 solo tackles ranked fourth in the conference, and his 14 tackles for loss tied for second among ACC linebackers and ranked eighth overall in the league.
Edmunds led the Hokies in tackles, tackles for loss, sacks (5.5) and forced fumbles (3) and helped anchor a Virginia Tech defense that paced the Power Five with only 21 Red Zone scores allowed and three shutouts, the most in the nation.
One of three brothers to play for the Hokies, he earned ACC Linebacker of the Week honors following a 10-0 win at Virginia (11/24) and was one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, presented to the nation’s top linebacker.
In his Virginia Tech career from 2015-17, Edmunds totaled 213 tackles, 33 of them for loss, and had ten sacks and an interception.
Pro Bowl roster selections were determined by the consensus vote of fans, players and coaches. Each group’s vote counts one-third toward determining the 88 All-Star players.
The NFL is the only sports league that uses the combined voting by fans, coaches and players to determine its All-Star teams. It was also the first professional sports league to offer online All-Star voting in 1995.
