Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Dowdy, 86, of Blacksburg, made her journey home on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.
She was born in Montgomery County on December 24, 1935, to Ray and Mallie (Huffman) Smith of Norris Run, Blacksburg. On Sept. 7, 1957, she married William Tommy Dowdy of Blacksburg, and they were together 43 years.
She worked for the Montgomery County Public School System for many years.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Carolyn S. (Dowdy) Hughett of Blacksburg; a granddaughter, Dana M. Draughn of Radford; two great-granddaughters, SeBrina R. Bibb and her fiancée Josh Dowdy of Christiansburg, along with their children, Lillian Bibb and McKenzie Spears, and Siera N. Brammer and husband, Joseph, of Pulaski along with their children, Maddie and Melody Brammer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Dowdy, ason, Michael T. Dowdy, and an infant great-great-granddaughter, Melody Rose Brammer.
Mary cherished and loved all of her family, and her nieces and nephews, but those closest to her heart were her niece, Carol “Ceffie-Bird,” and husband Jeff Wright, and son, Jacob Wright of Floyd; Zach and Brantley Elliott of Blacksburg; Rhonda Farley Carroll and Glenn Carroll of Blacksburg; Allen Odum of Harrisonburg; Ricky Draughn of Blacksburg; Ricky Cook of Blacksburg; and Jay Tickle of Christiansburg. Also close to Mary’s heart was her special neighbor and friend Betty Mae Terry of Blacksburg.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 26, 2021, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Todd Triplett officiating. Interment followed in the Smith Family Cemetery, Norris Run.
