Cave Spring’s Trey Ludy, one of the area’s top baseball stars, has signed a letter of intent to continue his playing career next season at Radford University.
Grace Addison of Abingdon will compete for the golf team at Radford.
West Virginia’s Amber Wolfe will play softball at Radford. A catcher, Wolfe was a member of the two-time state champions for the past two years and tied for her high school career home run record of 16.
Patrick Henry golfer Caroline Gilreath will also bring her talent to Radford. She finished third in the Valley Junior Girls tournament that was held at Hunting Hills Country Club.
Virginia Tech also landed several student-athletes from the area. Lord Botetourt golfer Ashton Harper will bring his talents to Blacksburg. In 2021, he won the VHSL Class 3 golf state title in 2021.
Abingdon’s Ethan Gibson will come to Blacksburg as a member of the baseball team.
In his junior season at Cave Spring, Ludy batted .459 with eight doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He also notched an earned run average of 2.16 from the mound.
For his effort, Ludy was named First Team All-Region outfield and Second Team All-Region pitcher. This past summer, he also played at the Virginia Commonwealth Games, going eight for 11 at the plate over the entire tournament.
Last week, he put his commitment to pen and paper in front of family, friends, and teammates in the Cave Spring auditorium.
Radford was always one of his top choices. “The location was perfect (just under an hour from home), the coaching staff was all were very positive and had great energy, the facilities are great and having the New River right on campus is great for me. I love fishing and kayaking in my spare time. Also, the size of Radford was exactly what I was looking for, not too big or small,” Ludy said.
He is undecided on a major, but admits Geospatial Science stands out to him. “It is one of the fastest growing fields, and I can see myself enjoying this field,” Ludy said.
His goal is to contribute anyway he can to the team. “I want to win a championship. I want to earn a starting spot as quickly as possible. I am very excited to face D1 competition. My first year I really want to grow as a player and gain as much experience as possible, get stronger, get better.”
At Radford, he will be a two-way player.
