Local students named to SNHU Dean’s List
MANCHESTER, NH – Gabriel Palma, of Blacksburg, and Rachel Perkins, of Christiansburg, have been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Summer 2023 Dean’s List. The summer terms run from May to August.
Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the Dean’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired eight-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.
Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is a private, nonprofit institution with a 90-year history of educating traditional-aged students and working adults.
Blacksburg resident named to James Madison University dean’s list
HARRISONBURG – Rebecca Linkous, of Blacksburg, has been named to the dean’s list at James Madison University for the summer 2023 semester. Students who earn dean’s list honors must carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a GPA of between 3.5 and 3.899. Linkous is majoring in Individualized Study – BS.
Founded in 1908, James Madison University is a public university located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
JMU congratulates participants in Dukes Making a Difference
HARRISONBURG – More than 140 students, many of them new to JMU, participated this August in DMAD: Dukes Making a Difference, to volunteer with nonprofit agencies in the Harrisonburg area, including Logan Boone and Emma Lucero, of Christiansburg. The program gives students an opportunity to meet other service-minded Dukes, to learn about Harrisonburg’s most pressing social issues and to interact with individuals and organizations making the Harrisonburg community a better place for all residents.
Ohio Wesleyan Student Spencer Amacher presents research at science symposium
DELAWARE, OH – Spencer Amacher, of Blacksburg, was among the student-scientists presenting original research at Ohio Wesleyan University’s 31st annual Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium.
Amacher presented “Prolonged Heart Preservation: Assessment of Cardiac Function With Intermittent Left Atrial Perfusion” conducted at the University of Michigan. Amacher is a Biochemistry – Basic and Pre-Medicine/Pre-Dentistry major.
The university’s Sept. 28 symposium featured more than 40 OWU students discussing their original research and answering questions at the two-hour event. Laura Tuhela-Reuning, director of the Summer Science Research Program (SSRP), shared her thoughts on the value of such mentored research experiences.
“One of the most rewarding parts of SSRP for me is watching the students grow as scientists, seeing them take command of a research project, and knowing that they are gaining the confidence to speak and act as scientists,” Tuhela-Reuning said. “Science cannot be learned solely from a book. Science must be experienced through research, and at OWU, we encourage students to plunge in, preparing them to be successful researchers both at OWU and at other universities.”

Radford student awarded Coast Guard Foundation Scholarship
The Coast Guard Foundation has awarded 187 new scholarships, totaling $650,000 in support for the 2023-2024 academic year. Since the program’s inception in 1990, the Foundation has awarded more than $6.9 million in scholarships, ensuring Coast Guard children can build strong futures through a college education or technical school training.
Meredith Dabney, child of the late Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class James Dabney from
Radford was awarded a Coast Guard Foundation Scholarship. She attends Texas Tech
University.
Coast Guard Foundation scholarships benefit the children of people who are serving or
have served in the U.S. Coast Guard, whether active duty, reserve, retired or deceased.

and their families have everything they need to be successful,” said Susan Ludwig,
president of the Coast Guard Foundation. “This includes, on an essential level, supporting
