BLACKSBURG – On Saturday, Feb. 3, Virginia Cooperative Extension will host their Quality Hay Production Workshop at the William M. Etgen Large Animal Learning Center in Blacksburg, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This program will provide livestock producers with valuable information from Dr. Kathryn Payne, Applied Forage Systems Specialist at the Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center and Dr. John Currin, Clinical Associate Professor from the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the VA-MD College of Veterinary Medicine. Topics for the program include: Hay sampling; Understanding forage analysis reports; Harvest timing and effects on hay nutritional value; Economics of quality hay; Applying results to livestock performance: weight gain, breeding, input costs vs. nutrient values, herd health and more.
Participants will be treated to lunch along with printed educational materials. Participants will also be offered at least one free hay test per operation (dependent on participation and funds) to encourage future forage sampling and increase awareness of hay quality on their operations.
