Things to Know
First Time Head Coach
The Hokies will compete against a Syracuse program that has a new head coach at the helm. In his first season with the Orange, head coach Fran Brown has led the program to a 5-2 record heading into Saturday’s contest. Brown most recently operated as the defensive backs coach at Georgia before being officially announced as Syracuse’s new head coach last December. Seven games into his inaugural season, Brown has notched two wins against ranked opponents with victories over then-No. 23 Georgia Tech at home and previously No. 25 UNLV on the road in overtime. So far this season in conference play, the Orange have evenly split their four matchups including both matchups at home.
Been Some Time
Virginia Tech and Syracuse have been scheduled to face off three of the last four seasons. Tech won in dominant fashion in the latest matchup, a 38-10 thwarting of the Orange at Lane Stadium on Thursday Night in 2023. Now, with the contest moving to New York, it marks the first game at Syracuse in over eight years. Interestingly enough, it will be only the second matchup played in upstate New York since 2002. Overall, in the series’ history, the hosting team has found the most success, and the Hokies will aim to buck that trend after winning its latest ACC matchup on the road against Stanford.
Players to Watch
Wide Receiver Da’Quan Felton
Since transferring to Virginia Tech last season, Felton has showcased his ability to be a big play threat. Numerous times in 2023, the Portsmouth, Virginia native hauled in the deep ball for touchdowns, including a 62-yard touchdown against Syracuse. He’s also showcased his big play ability this season with a 55-yard touchdown at Stanford. Felton now enters the weekend only 64 yards away from 2,000 receiving yards for his career.
Wide Receiver Jaylin Lane
Just like his fellow receiver counterpart, Jaylin Lane has displayed his versatility as a playmaker in Tech’s offense since transferring from Middle Tennessee State in 2023. Lane currently leads the Hokies in receptions (29) and receiving yards (353) this season. The redshirt senior is very close to a significant milestone of his own. If the talented wideout can amass 109 yards through the air, he will reach the 1,000 receiving yards mark as a Hokie.
