BLACKSBURG – For the second year Warm Hearth Village (WHV) has hosted the Radford Carilion Department of Physical Therapy bringing valuable health evaluations to 50 residents and fitness members. Village residents and fitness members regularly participate in a variety of exercise classes at the Fitness Center and the Radford Carilion Department of Physical Therapy wanted to learn which classes were most effective in helping them prevent falls. The fall risk assessment was conducted by physical therapy students under the supervision of faculty experts. Participants needed to be 60 or older, participate regularly in class offerings, and be able to move and walk independently.
Arco Paul, PT, PhD., an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Radford University Carilion, and the lead researcher on this project, said it felt great to interact with the residents and to hear about the growing popularity of this event. “Such projects are a win-win for everyone – for older adults who are worried about falls and want to do everything to stay balanced and fit, and as learning activities for budding physical therapists.”
While this year’s findings have not yet been analyzed, last year’s results showed participants were doing well and had an overall low fall risk. Most participants typically attend one to two fitness classes at the Village each week. Those attending two classes had a lower fall risk than those attending one class per week; this suggests more engagement in fitness offerings lowers the risk of falls in this population. Some participants also attended pool classes, though land classes are likely more valuable in lessening fall risk.
“The study was so well organized, and I could not have asked for better people to work with and encourage me,” said resident Betsy O’Brien who has participated both years. “The students were so encouraging, and I learned I hadn’t deteriorated as much as I thought I had,” she added. “I attribute it to the balance and exercise classes at Warm Hearth, and I also swim. I would like to participate again.”
Kenny Harrah, Director of Fitness for WHV, said the Village is fortunate to have the Radford University Carilion team so close and interested in this older adult population. “This research provides useful information to our residents and fitness members and even more, the intergenerational interaction of the young adults with the older adults has proven to so meaningful to both parties. Our residents and fitness members look forward to showing the students how fit and active they are, and the students are always impressed with how much these seniors can do. It’s a great experience for all involved,” Harrah said.
Harrah said they will continue to stress the importance of staying physically active and socially connected. Members and new recruits are encouraged to take a variety of classes or to take physical therapy when necessary. This research connection will continue with the WHV Fitness Center and Radford Carilion Dept of Physical Therapy. Other studies can be added as they arise.
The Fitness Center is open to the public aged 50 and above.
