Auburn and Blacksburg high school girls’ track teams claimed state indoor titles this past week.
Auburn was led by a second-place finish by Alyson Funk in the 1600 with teammate Beverly Warner third as they tallied 91 points to outdistance Brunswick who finished with 78 points. Northampton was third and Eastern Montgomery was tenth as Aija McHone won the state Class 1,300 meters.
The Auburn boys’ team finished third with 71.5 points. Lancaster rolled to the team win with 83 points and second place Galileo with 80 points.
Auburn’s Talan Mower won the pole vault with a 12-06 mark. Drew Royal also won the high jump at 6-04 meters.
The Blacksburg girls’ picked up 106 points to second place Atlee’s 70 points for the Class 4 indoor title. The Blacksburg boys would finish in third behind Atlee and Jamestown.
In Class 3, Christiansburg’s Leila Haley would win the 500 and 300 meters, while finishing fourth in the 55 meters. As a team, Christiansburg would be fourth behind first-place Heritage and second-place Spotswood. The Christiansburg boys would place 28th.
In Class 2, the Radford boys would pick up an individual win from Essiq Williams in the 300-meter dash. But as a team, they would finish out of the top three with 15th place finish. The Radford girls were 19th.
