BLACKSBURG — In recognition of International Women’s Day, local organizers hosted a March for Women rally in Blacksburg.
The rally was held Saturday, Mar. 8, 2025, and took place in front of the Lyric Theater at 11:30 a.m.
“The March for Women rally aims to bring attention to pressing women’s rights issues in the current political climate,” organizers announced. “The rally comes at a crucial time for women’s rights advocacy and aims to unite the community in support of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and inclusive progress for all.”
“We’ve made incredible progress in advancing women’s rights and equality, but there’s still work to be done,” said event organizer Molly Lawson. “Now more than ever, we must stand together to protect the rights at stake and keep moving forward. We hope this event inspires our community and strengthens the momentum we need to create lasting change.”
The event included several speakers addressing the 2025 International Women’s Day theme as recognized by the United Nations. International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The day has been observed since the early 1900s and continues to be a powerful platform for highlighting issues affecting women worldwide and advocating for positive change.
Attendees were encouraged to bring signs and wear purple, the color associated with International Women’s Day, to show solidarity. The rally was open to people of all genders who support women’s rights and gender equality.
