Montgomery County Sheriff Hank Partin has announced plans to retire at the end of March.
Members of the county board of supervisors were told of the plans during their meeting this past week.
Partin has served as sheriff since 2016 and with the department since 1993, serving as a captain over the criminal warrants and civil process and courthouse security divisions. He is also a veteran with over 22 years of service in the National Guard and Army Reserves, retiring as a sergeant major.
In 2022, then-Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin appointed him to the Virginia Parole Board.
Montgomery County will have to hold a special election to complete Partin’s term, which stretches through 2027. The person would serve for one more year and then have to run again in November of 2027.
The special election would take place in November, so an interim sheriff will be appointed for the eight months leading up to it.
So far, no one has announced their intentions to seek the post. Partin is expected to name an acting sheriff in the near future.
