The Pilot Community Center continues to expand in their outreach to the Pilot community with the Little Library’s free books and puzzles – and tutoring – in addition to other planned events scheduled for the coming year.
The Little Library is also in need of volunteers to open the building and make books available. Those interested in donating some time to the accessibility of the library should send an email to tbyronk@gmail.com.
According to their website (https://sites.google.com/view/pcclibrary/home) the Little Library/Tutoring and Puzzles are available by appointment during the winter months and will resume on Mondays with hours from 3-5 p.m. in April.
Free tutoring is offered for anyone including math, ESL, and English tutoring. Instructors can meet online or at the Pilot Community Center or just stop by the Center on Mondays from 3-5 p.m.
“We hope to have a book box available by this summer so that community members can take or leave books whenever needed,” the website at http://pilotcommunitycenter.weebly.com reads.
In partnership with the Montgomery County Public Libraries in Christiansburg, the MFRL Bookmobile is parking at the Pilot Post Office to allow access to community members wishing to check out books and other materials.
“The partnership was created by Pamela Hale, and continued since 2014,” PCC Librarian/Webmaster Byron Kelly said.
The Bookmobile has a monthly schedule that can be found on their website at https://sites.google.com/view/pcclibrary/home; however, the upcoming dates are March 28, April 18, May 9 and May 30, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Another aspect of the historical Pilot Community Center is the Pilot School Gallery. Their website at https://sites.google.com/view/pcclibrary/home features a Virtual Gallery containing community poetry and artwork of New River Valley members but also internationally. A monthly meeting for Artists is held at the PCC on the first Monday at 3 p.m. Interested individuals can call about the art space if they are interested.
The Pilot Community Center wants to continue to improve and repair the historical building that was once a community school and is currently in talks with the Appalachian Regional Commission to establish grant money. Restoration so far has been accomplished through support and donations from the surrounding community.
“The community has really rallied around the Center and give it a fresh start. It is really amazing, and I hope we can continue on this road, it has been a good one so far. I have been amazed by the Community Center members,” Kelly said. “Who knows what would have happened to this historical building without them.”
On March 30, from 2-3 p.m., Pilot Community Center will host an Easter Egg Hunt, weather permitting.
The PCC address is 4449 Brush Creek Rd. Pillot VA and a phone number for the Little Library is 540-585-4448. Please send questions or suggestions to tbyronk@gmail.com.
