Irene McCoy was born Feb. 26, 1941, to the late Atlas Burnette “Kack” and Ollie Comer Scott of Spruce Run, Va. She passed peacefully and entered the kingdom of glory on April 8, 2024.
Irene wore many hats in her lifetime but most will remember her as Miss Irene, the proprietor of Long Shop Grocery. Three were blessed to know her as Mom. Mom was a “giver.” If she thought you were in need, whether it was food, support, an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or an extra voice to defend you… she was there!
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Erie Carroll McCoy; sisters: Edith S. Fleeman and Dorothy S. Sexton; and brothers James Scott, Buddy Scott, Billy Scott and J.W. Scott.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Lloyd Richards, Dena Richards and Vicky (Ricky) Sowers; grandchildren George (Shannon) Shumate, Zachary Shumate, Chelsie Richards, McKinley Noonkester, Stevin (Kahealani) Wilburn, Hope (Brian) Bradbury, Ricky Sowers, Tori Lynn Sowers and Amarynn Sowers; great grandchildren Isaac Shumate, Lucas Shumate, Lena Shumate, Jessie Shumate, Grayson Bradbury, Jackson Bradbury, Libby Rose Bradbury and Brantley Elliott; sister Marie S. Hubbard; and brothers Denny Scott, Bobby Scott and Roy Scott.
Mom, Mawmaw, Miss Irene, you made broken look beautiful and strong look invincible. The impression you made in this world will forever be felt. We will carry your love, wisdom, and fierce dedication for righteousness within us always. You will be missed immensely! We find comfort in knowing your days are pain-free and filled with sunshine now. Take care of our Angel Doll Baby. We Love You Always! A huge thank you to all who cared for our sweet Mama, especially The Good Samaritan Hospice whose comfort was a Godsend.
