Christiansburg High School has turned to a familiar face to lead its football program this fall.
Offensive coordinator Matt Heron has been promoted to the post.
In the announcement, Principal Shane Guynn said Heron brings a wealth of experience, passion and strong commitment to fostering excellence on both on and off the field. Heron has coached for the past six years under Alex Wilkens, who stepped down last month. Heron has served the past five seasons as the school’s offensive coordinator.
“My goal for Christiansburg football is that our players will be recognized by their success, both on the football field and in life beyond football,” the new coach said. “They will be the best spouse, parent, job candidate and community member that they are capable of being. I want myself and our coaching staff to develop our athletes to maximize their potential at CHS and beyond.”
Previously, Heron coached for five years at Cave Spring High School. He has also been the head coach of Christiansburg Lacrosse for the past two seasons, and coached baseball for 10 seasons at Roanoke Catholic, Cave Spring and Christiansburg.
He attended Northside High School in Roanoke, where he played football. Heron cites the examples set by his former mentors.
“My youth coach was Coach Bob Price, who won four state championships as head coach at Roanoke Catholic,” he said. “My father also coached football at Roanoke Catholic with Coach Price.”
Heron played baseball at Roanoke College where he received his undergraduate degree and a Master’s degree from Grand Canyon University.
