Christiansburg held off a pesky Floyd squad, and Blacksburg rolled in a win over Giles in Week one.
Eastern Montgomery and Radford started the season off on a down note with two separate losses.
The player of week is Blacksburg QB Sam Szefc, who threw for three touchdowns and 203 yards on a seven of 10 for a 32-12 win over Giles.
This week’s matchups:
Abingdon at Christiansburg (1-0)
Last week, Abingdon beat John Battle 42-6. Abingdon finished 6-5 a year ago including a 45-7 regular season and regional playoff 26-7 losses to Christiansburg.
The Falcons return 20 seniors and 16 starters, but maybe none more promising than quarterback Isaac Brooks and running back Owen Barr.
Giles (0-1) at Radford (0-1)
Radford sophomore Luke Gaither threw for 205 yards including a 64-yard score in his debut, but George Wythe took the 28-7 win. Giles fell to Blacksburg.
Eastern Montgomery (0-1) at Rural Retreat (1-0)
Eastern Montgomery will face an Indian squad that rolled in a 52-7 win over Ft. Chiswell. Seven different players scored in that contest. Chaz Penwright led Rural Retreat with 59 yards on five carries, while their defense held its opponent to 96 total yards of offense.
Blacksburg (1-0) at Lord Botetourt (0-1)
Botetourt is coming off a 11-8 overtime loss to E.C. Glass. Blacksburg will be able to move the ball, especially through the air but can they outscore an opponent trying to break out of the barn.
Blacksburg had two 100-yard rushers last week with Jared Bradley tallying 108 yards on six carries and Jaxon Keys for 101 yards on 15 carries.
This week’s predictions:
Radford 32, Giles 14
Rural Retreat 32, Eastern Montgomery 12
Lord Botetourt 34, Blacksburg 21
Christiansburg 32, Abingdon 30.
