CHRISTIANSBURG – Construction of the new and improved Christiansburg High School (CHS) reveals many updates that will provide for a safer, healthier, and brighter school for Christiansburg students.
The Montgomery County School Board and the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors held a joint meeting on Mar. 17, 2025. The meeting opened with a video tour from the grounds of the Christiansburg High School where renovations are ongoing. Crabtree, Rohrbaugh, and Associates Architects is the architectural design firm heading up the renovations.
The video tour, which can be accessed at www.montva.com, walks viewers through ongoing construction at CHS. Some of the features for the new high school will be more windows for light, wider hallways, a larger cafeteria and spacious more visual bathrooms for safety, fitted with vape detectors.
The administration suite of offices has a stairway providing quick and direct access to the counseling center and to the in-school suspension (ISS) area. The Media Center also provides large windows bringing in natural light, video boards and whiteboards, and collaboration and educational spaces for students to meet with each other or instructors.
World Language classrooms are also part of the new construction.
“Hopefully those are going to be done here by the end of the summer, and we’ll be able to transition those teachers and classes into this area,” Principal Shane Guynn said in the video tour.
A new auxiliary gym is also under construction with an adjacent concession area and school store.
“Christiansburg High School has never had access to two gym spaces on this campus, so we are really excited to open this opportunity for our P.E., heath and P.E. classes along with just being able to host our sports teams and practices and other events that we see fit,” Guynn said. “We look for the auxiliary gym to be available by the start of the school year as they’re finishing renovations on the main gym.”
The kitchen and food preparation area, along with an expansive freezer and refrigerator section, is also a highlight of the new CHS site. After passing through the cafeteria entrance, a display case will hold exhibits from the historical Christiansburg Institute.
Superintendent Bernard Bragen, Jr. said the CHS project is “actually ahead of schedule and under budget still, so we’re looking to have some type of ceremony probably in July if all goes well, because that’s when they’re going to move into the new space and then start renovating some of the old space.”
