RADFORD – A break-in and theft at the VFW Post 776 home in Radford has left thousands of dollars in damages in its wake, leaving the cash-strapped post trying to out things right at its headquarters.

According to VFW Post 776 Commander Nathan VanHoy, the break-in occurred Friday, Aug. 29.

“Sometime in the evening, I pulled up to the post and saw that the front door was open, but still locked,” said VanHoy. “I walked inside and noticed that my office door had been kicked in and the kitchen window was smashed.

“Upon further investigation, I noticed that the suspect had attempted to break into our safe with all of our Honor Guard rifles,” he continued. “I assume this person thought there was money in there, but they couldn’t get it open, because when I got there, the handle was broken off and missing. The microwave was on the floor, where the suspect had smashed in the window and knocked the microwave off the shelf to climb through. They also attempted to steal a World War I rifle out of our display case, but I guess they thought it had no value because they put it on top of our coolers on the other side of the room. A few other things were damaged and we had a couple articles of clothing stolen.”

VanHoy said the incident is still under investigation and caused about $5000 in damages.

“Any support [from the public] is appreciated,” he said. “We are still waiting for insurance to let us know how much they can do. We will have to pay for the rest.”
