The Rotary Club of Montgomery County held its third annual pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 27, at Church on Main, in downtown Blacksburg.
The fundraiser supports the club’s Coats for Kids Campaign to provide winter coats and other outerwear for children in Montgomery County Public Schools.
This year’s event was a great success due in part to a new revenue stream called “Donating 4 Denton Dollars.” The idea for generating additional funds came from Dr. Robert “Bob” Denton who presented the club with a generous $1,000 donation match challenge. Known to many as Dr. Bob, he is a regional television political analyst, former director of the School of Communication at Virginia Tech and the W. Thomas Rice Chair at Pamplin College of Business. Through his commitment and the support of the New River Valley community, the club raised $2,592.00 to go toward the campaign.
“The Coats for Kids campaign began 16 years ago when a former member’s wife was an elementary school principal and told the club of the need for outerwear,” said John Tutle, campaign chairman. “This year’s efforts will truly make a difference for many families and keep our children warm throughout the winter.” The community’s support and the generosity of Dr. Bob’s idea exemplify Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”
