Christiansburg Farmers Market

The Christiansburg Farmers Market is located at Christiansburg Huckleberry Park. The market features local farmers and vendors each Thursday. Seasonal produce, plants, fresh baked goods, crafts, fresh flowers, and handmade jewelry are some of the items available for purchase. Items for purchase vary week-to-week. Check the Facebook page for details about weekly themes, prizes, vendors, and live music. The Farmers Market will run May 15 – Oct. 30, 3-7 p.m.

 

Friday, Oct. 3:

 

“The Art of Becoming” artist talk

Brook Ramsey’s exhibition, “The Art of Becoming,” is on display in the Tyler Gallery, 214 Tyler Ave., Radford. Her art blends realism and surrealism powerfully. As the artist puts it, “Transitions between portrait, nature, and surreal elements show how everything in life transforms into something new.” On Oct. 3, at 3 p.m., Ramsey will discuss her work which will be followed by a closing reception with refreshments. Free and open to all.

Fall Luncheon & Bingo

Join Blacksburg Parks and Recreation’s Active Adults program for the Fall Luncheon and Bingo, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Blacksburg Community Center. The Birds: A Spooky Movie Watching Event

The Radford Public Library will host a free showing of the 1963 Alfred Hitchcock classic “The Birds,” 5:30- 7:30 p.m. in the library Community Room. Based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, “The Birds” has terrified audiences for decades and is considered among Hitchcock’s best films. Popcorn and light refreshments will be available at the free program. Rated PG-13.

 

Saturday, Oct. 11:

 

Children’s Consignment Sale

Co-sponsored by Blacksburg United Methodist Church and YMCA at Virginia Tech at the Y Center, 1000 N. Main St., Blacksburg, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Great deals on gently used seasonal baby, kids and teen clothes and shoes, toys, books, baby gear, sports equipment, maternity clothing and more. Many items are like-new (some even brand-new). Some items will be half-price between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. but you will want to shop early for the best selection. Cash or checks only. There is space for new consignors. Consignors retain 80% of proceeds from the sale of their items and can shop a pre-sale before it opens to the public. Fall Leaf Mulch Distribution

Leaf mulch available for pick up at Glade Road Growing, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Loose and bagged leaves collected by the town are composted into leaf mulch. This mulch can be used as a soil additive, for composting. This is an important service as composted leaf mulch keeps leaves out of landfills. Leaves can take up valuable landfill space and produce harmful greenhouse gasses. To arrange pickup, residents must register and follow the guidelines below. Register for a 30-minute time slot. Time slots are in 30-minute intervals starting at 8 a.m. Limit two cubic yards per truck or trailer. The Town will load your truck or trailer.

Vintage Market

Shop at the Blacksburg Vintage Market on the second and fourth Sundays of every month from April through November, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the best selection of vintage vinyl, clothing, jewelry, books, housewares, oddities and who knows what else, at the corner of Roanoke Street and Draper Avenue, in Market Square park, under the Farmer’s market structure.

 

Monday, Oct. 13:

 

Montgomery County Board of Supervisors meeting

Public meetings are normally held the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Montgomery County Government Center, 755 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg. Closed sessions begin at 6 p.m. if needed. Open sessions begin at 7:15 p.m. Citizens are invited to attend and allowed to speak at each meeting. All regular meetings of the Board of Supervisors are rebroadcast on Montgomery County Comcast and Shentel Channels 190 daily.

 

Radford City Council meeting

The Radford City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Radford Municipal Building, 10 Robertson St., Radford. Citizens are invited to attend and allowed to speak at each meeting. See the agenda at www.radfordva.gov.

 

Tuesday, Oct. 14:

 

Christiansburg Town Council meeting

Regular town council meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month beginning at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Town Hall (100 E. Main St.). The public is welcome and encouraged to attend, with a citizen hearing time reserved at each meeting for residents to bring any matter they desire before the entire council. The meeting will be live streamed to the Town’s YouTube page at www.christiansburg.org/YouTube. Please copy and paste the URL into your browser and be sure to select Live videos to view. Agendas and minutes can be viewed at www.christiansburg.org/agendasandminutes.

 

Blacksburg Town Council meeting

The council meets in regular session the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Roger E. Hedgepeth Chambers of the Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 S. Main St. These meetings are open to the public and televised live on WTOB Channel 2.

 

Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting

The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stuart Horse Artillery Camp 1784 will meet at 7 p.m. at the NRV Super Bowl at 375 Arbor Dr., NE, Christiansburg. Members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) are also invited to attend. Death Cafe with Good Samaritan Hospice

At the Radford Public Library, 6 – 7 p.m. Talking about death won’t kill you. But it can help your ease your fears, address your concerns, and make you better informed about your options regarding end-of-life arrangements. Join us at the library to discuss hospice and palliative care. Representatives from Good Samaritan Hospice will be present to offer free information and answer questions about hospice care in general and in our area specifically. Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be provided.

Radford Fiddle and Banjo Jam at Bee & Butter

Bee & Butter restaurant, in the Highlander Hotel on Tyler Ave., is now open on Monday nights during the Radford Fiddle and Banjo Jam. The jam is held at the restaurant 6- 9 p.m. each Monday evening.
