CHRISTIANSBURG – Cindy M. Fisher, CCMA, Care Coordination and Vaccine Supervisor for the Community Health Center of the New River Valley (CHCNRV) in Christiansburg, has been named Nurse of the Year by the Virginia Community Health Association (VCHA).
The award was presented by VCHA Chief Executive Officer Tracy Douglas, MS, during the VCHA annual conference in Roanoke, recognizing Fisher’s exceptional leadership, dedication, and significant impact.
“Cindy’s leadership and vision have had a remarkable impact on our patients and our community,” said Rebecca King-Mallory, MD, CHCNRV Chief Medical Officer, who nominated Fisher for the honor.
Fisher oversees both care coordination and vaccine programs for CHCNRV, guiding a team dedicated to improving patient outcomes. Under her direction, the center’s colorectal cancer screening rates rose from 30% in 2019 to more than 76% by the end of 2024, placing the clinic among the top performers in the state.
“Cindy’s ability to strategically lead and follow through on complex initiatives is extraordinary,” Dr. King-Mallory added. “Her certification as a Cancer Screening Navigator reflects both her clinical expertise and her deep compassion. She not only helps patients access lifesaving screenings but also walks alongside them during some of the most difficult times in their lives.”
Beyond her work inside the clinic, Fisher has become a trusted voice in preventive care across Virginia, presenting at statewide conferences and actively participating in community outreach events to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and cancer screening. She was instrumental in CHCNRV earning the Cancer Screening Badge from the Health Resources and Services Administration, the only Virginia health center to be recognized.
