Blacksburg officials are taking a slower approach to expanding residential areas within the locality.
While council admits more is needed, they hope to use the town’s comprehensive plan as a roadmap for the future.
This past week, council denied two high density projects, which would have added over 1,000 new bedrooms to the community. Both requested changes from Medium Density Multiunit Residential (RM-48) Zoning to Planned Residential (PR) Zoning.
The first project was Tech Terrace Redevelopment, directly across the street from the university on Prices Fork Road. The high-density plan would have rezoned 2.638 acres on Webb and Orchard streets.
The second one was planned off University Blvd. and would have been located on 4.637 acres to the rear of a current Kroger’s fuel station. Residents from the adjacent McBryde Village area of the town expressed concern over the height of the building, which would have been six stories with commercial on the lower floor and residential on the upper ones.
Again, council members expressed concern about how this project affected the town’s comprehensive plan.
